Fundraiser aids nonprofit Support Homeless Veterans Inc. - 8/22/2014
After six years of service in the Army, William Olsen found himself at rock bottom. A VA hospital admitted him, which is where he started his recovery, and then he went to a dual diagnosis treatment center called Impact Services. "That’s where I met Miss Cara Colantuono," Olsen said.
Colantuono, of Glenside, is a social worker at Abington Memorial Hospital and also the founder of Support Homeless Veterans Inc., a nonprofit whose donations go directly to helping veterans, as there is no paid staff. Colantuono, the granddaughter of two veterans, said she founded the organization in 2011 as a way to get the community involved in helping veterans.
The fundraiser the night of Aug. 19 helped raise funds for veterans like Olsen. Gilchrist invited other GOP candidates such as Robert Gillies, running for state representative for the 154th District, Dee Adcock, candidate for the 13th Congressional District, and Armond James, running for the 2nd Congressional District, to scoop water ice that night and spread the word about SHV’s services.
